College Station Family Photographer | Family Newborn Lifestyle Session | College Station , TX

Below I will share 8 tips on preparing your older children for a newborn session! Read along to see.

I met the beautiful Maxwell family on a summer Friday morning. This family was referred to me by a dear friend that I have known for years, so this made me very excited to connect with more College Station, TX moms in the area. They have 3 precious children, but we were really focusing on the newest addition to their bunch – Marlie Jay! She has the cutest older brothers that I know will be big protectors in her life as she gets older. Once I arrived at their gorgeous home, we found the best room with natural light and made sure to get those formal shots of everyone looking before we might lose the two oldest boys with distractions or a much needed snack break. We worked around to their master bedroom, Marlie’s sweet nursery and then outside for some greenery shots. I loved this session and can’t wait to watch these kids grow over the years in College Station, TX.

Preparing Older Siblings for a Newborn In-Home Photography Session

Capturing Precious Moments: Ensuring a Smooth Experience for Everyone

Welcoming a new addition to the family is a momentous occasion filled with joy and anticipation. As a photographer specializing in newborn in-home sessions, I understand the importance of including older siblings in these cherished moments. To ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for everyone involved, here are some tips on preparing older siblings for the upcoming session.

1. Open Communication is Key

Start by having an open and age-appropriate conversation with your older child about the upcoming photography session. Explain that a talented photographer will be coming to capture beautiful moments with the newest member of the family. Encourage them to share any questions or concerns they may have.

2. Set Realistic Expectations

Help your older child understand what to expect during the session. Explain that there may be times when they’ll be asked to pose or interact with their new sibling, but also reassure them that there will be plenty of opportunities for natural, candid moments.

3. Involve Them in Preparations

Include your older child in the preparations for the session. Let them help choose outfits or props, and involve them in setting up the space where the photos will be taken. This not only empowers them but also makes them feel like an important part of the process.

4. Emphasize Their Role as a Big Brother/Sister

Highlight the special role your older child holds as a big brother or sister. Explain how their presence and love are cherished, and how the photographs will capture the unique bond they share with their new sibling.

5. Plan for Breaks and Snacks

Newborn sessions can sometimes take a bit of time, and it’s important to be mindful of your older child’s comfort. Plan for breaks where they can relax, play, or have a snack. This helps maintain a positive attitude and ensures that they enjoy the experience.

6. Encourage Natural Interactions

While posed shots can be beautiful, some of the most precious moments come from natural interactions between siblings. Encourage your older child to share gentle touches, smiles, and kisses with their new brother or sister.

7. Be Patient and Flexible

Children, especially younger ones, may have their own ideas about how the session should go. Be patient and flexible, allowing for moments of spontaneity. Sometimes the most heartwarming shots happen when everyone is simply being themselves.

8. Celebrate Together

After the session, take some time to celebrate the experience with your older child. Look through the images together and talk about your favorite moments. This reinforces the positive memories and helps them feel valued and included.

Capturing Timeless Memories

Including older siblings in a newborn in-home photography session can result in truly touching and memorable images. By preparing them ahead of time and involving them in the process, you’re not only creating beautiful photographs but also fostering a sense of togetherness and love that will be cherished for years to come.

I look forward to capturing these special moments with your family. If you have any specific questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Together, we’ll create a collection of images that tell the beautiful story of your growing family.
